Banks’ Response to Rising Rates & Liquidity Concerns

Midday Monday: Bank stocks ahead of broader market

U.S. bank and thrift stocks were up around midday Monday, June 5, while the broader markets were trading lower.

The SNL U.S. Bank Index increased 0.87% to 520.29, and the SNL Thrift Index added 0.41% to 889.12. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.04% to 21,198.31, the Nasdaq composite index lost 0.17% to 6,295.22, and the S&P 500 decreased 0.12% to 2,436.18.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. rose 0.79% to $83.2932, Bank of America Corp. increased 0.73% to $22.615, Wells Fargo & Co. gained 0.53% to $52.085, and Citigroup Inc. climbed 0.80% to $61.60.

Among other price movers in the banking scene, Zions Bancorp. gained 2.24% to $41.00, Fifth Third Bancorp improved 1.44% to $23.98, and First BanCorp. advanced 3.24% to $5.41.

In the thrift space, BofI Holding Inc. climbed 1.59% to $22.67, and New York Community Bancorp Inc. rose 1.93% to $13.200, while Greene County Bancorp Inc. (MHC) lost 8.69% to $22.60.
