New Orleans City Council signs off on construction of Entergy peaker project

Entergy New Orleans LLC on March 8 secured the approval of the New Orleans City Council to build a 128-MW, natural gas-fired power plant.

A panel from the City Council advanced the company's application for the New Orleans Power Station in February.

"There has been quite a bit of misinformation circulated over the last 18 months by opponents to the plant. However, as demonstrated by independent, third-party experts who testified during the council's December evidentiary hearing, the unit is sound from economic, safety and environmental perspectives," Entergy New Orleans President and CEO Charles Rice said in a news release.

The proposed power plant is intended to replace the deactivated Michoud units. The Entergy Corp. subsidiary said it will cost about $210 million to build the project, which will consist of seven natural gas-fired reciprocating engines.

The company expects to issue a full notice to proceed to the engineering, procurement and construction contractor this March. Completion of the project is anticipated in January 2020.
