Report: EDP to shortlist bidders for €2B Portuguese hydro portfolio

EDP - Energias de Portugal SA is set to shortlist five or six groups in the final round of bidding for a circa 2-GW portfolio of Portuguese hydro assets valued at more than €2 billion.

Portugal's largest electricity generator is expected to take Spain's Iberdrola SA, Norway's Statkraft AS and Austria's Verbund AG to the next stage, Reuters reported Sept. 5, citing three sources with knowledge of the matter. Other rumored bidders include Canada's Brookfield Asset Management Inc., Australia's Macquarie Group Ltd. and France's Engie SA, but it is not clear whether they will make the final round.

"The shortlist includes five names, but another potential candidate may still rejoin the process," said one of the sources.

Binding bids for EDP's hydro operations are due in late September but negotiations could extend to October, another source told Reuters. "EDP is not under pressure as it has until the end of the year to close this dossier," the source added.

Endesa SA, the Spanish subsidiary of Italy's Enel SpA, is said to have placed an offer deemed too low but could still make the cut if it raises its bid. Meanwhile, Spain's Naturgy Energy Group SA had evaluated the portfolio but did not submit a bid, the sources said. Naturgy refused to comment.

EDP is also looking to divest its thermal assets and a portion of interests in Spanish and Portuguese networks.
