Ørsted to use GE's 12-MW turbines for 2 offshore US wind projects

Ørsted A/S announced Sept. 19 that it has selected GE Renewable Energy as the preferred turbine supplier for two offshore wind projects in the mid-Atlantic U.S. totaling 1,220 MW.

The projects will be the first commercial deployment of GE Renewable's Haliade-X 12-MW wind turbine, according to a news release.

The 120-MW Skipjack off Maryland and 1,100-MW Ocean Wind off New Jersey will be Ørsted's second and third offshore wind farms to use GE Renewable Energy turbines. Skipjack is expected to be commissioned in 2022, and Ocean Wind is anticipated to begin operations in 2024, according to the news release. Both projects will operate in the PJM Interconnection service territory.

"We look forward to introducing the next generation offshore wind turbine to the market," Ørsted Executive Vice President and CEO Martin Neubert said.

In the U.S., Ørsted has been awarded construction rights to build offshore wind farms in Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island, which have a total capacity of approximately 2.9 GW and are scheduled to be commissioned by 2024.

GE Renewable is a subsidiary of General Electric Co.
