Japan Tobacco Inc. on Sept. 18 reported that its domestic cigarette sales in August dropped 3.4% year over year to ¥42.3 billion from ¥43.8 billion.
The Tokyo-based cigarette-maker said it sold 6.6 billion cigarettes in the month, down 10.6% from 7.3 billion cigarettes sold a year ago.
Year-to-date, the company's domestic cigarette sales dropped 0.4% to ¥325.7 billion from ¥326.9 billion in 2018. From January to August, the company sold 50.6 billion cigarettes, a decrease of 7.7% from the same period a year ago.
The company's domestic market share for the month was 59.8%.
In July, Japan Tobacco's domestic cigarette sales rose 3% year over year.
As of Sept. 17, US$1 was equivalent to ¥108.15.
