Starbucks teams up with Alibaba for Shanghai Roastery

Underpinned by technology from Chinese e-commerce behemoth Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., coffee giant Starbucks Corp. on Dec. 6 will open its biggest and most interactive location to date in Shanghai.

The two-story, 30,000-square-foot Starbucks Reserve Roastery includes an in-store augmented reality experience, built in partnership with Alibaba. Using Alibaba's Taobao mobile app, customers can scan different features in the store with their smartphone for the app to deliver visuals, animations and more information.

The Roastery will feature a Princi Italian bakery, three different coffee bars and a two-story, 40-ton copper cask that holds the finished coffee after it has been roasted, according to announcements from both companies.

Customers can also purchase the Roastery's branded merchandise and whole-bean coffee on Alibaba's Tmall.

Starbucks opened its first Roastery in its home market of Seattle in 2014.

The Shanghai Roastery highlights the coffee chain's ambition in China, which is its fastest-growing market with a store opening every 15 hours. Starbucks currently operates more than 3,000 stores across 136 Chinese cities and more than 600 stores in Shanghai alone, the largest number of stores in any city where it has a presence.
