Procter & Gamble Co. is set to slash hundreds of jobs at its Kansas City, Kan., and Iowa City, Iowa, facilities, The Wall Street Journal reported Feb. 7.
The consumer goods retailer reportedly told staff that its Kansas plant, which employs 280 people, would cease operations by the end of 2020, while its Iowa factory will be downsized by about 500 employees, leaving 100 jobs intact. P&G plans to open a facility in West Virginia in 2020, which will employ some 900 people, including about 200 who will be relocated from the Kansas City operation. Workers in Cincinnati will take on additional duties created by the job cuts in Iowa. P&G noted that it remains unclear how many jobs will ultimately be lost or gained.
The move came as a part of P&G's overhaul to get soap, razors and diapers to retailers faster.
A company spokesman added that the company was also growing its Ohio, North Carolina, Utah and remaining Iowa facilities, the Journal reported. P&G did not disclose the cost of the expansion.
