Acciona's Easter Island solar project to cut 8% of diesel used for power

Acciona Energia SA donated a 128-kWp grid-connected photovoltaic solar project on Easter Island to the Chilean territory.

The plant, built by the Acciona SA subsidiary, consists of 400 silicon panels and will help avoid 8% of the diesel fuel consumption used for electricity generation, according to a Nov. 12 news release, which has to be regularly brought by sea to Easter Island from the Chilean mainland.

"This small facility represents a very important symbolic step forward in the necessary transition of Easter Island to a clean and sustainable energy system," Acciona Energía CEO for South America José Escobar said in a news release.

The facility is part of Acciona's renewable portfolio in Chile, which also includes a 246-MW solar plant in Atacama that came online in November 2016 and a 45-MW wind farm in Coquimbo.

Additionally, the company is building a 183-MW wind project in La Araucanía and plans to also begin construction on a wind project and two photovoltaic solar facilities in 2019.
