Virginia Conservation Legacy Fund Inc. has idled one of its West Virginia coal mines and furloughed the workers.
According to a local news report, the Federal No. 2 mine has been idled until further notice and the workers furloughed.
WorkForce West Virginia shows that Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notices were given on Sept. 11, affecting 252 workers.
The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration lists the status of the mine in Monongalia County as "nonproducing." Federal No. 2 produced 210,769 tons of coal in the third quarter, down from 336,130 tons in the same period a year ago. The agency listed 225 underground workers in the recent quarter and 60 other workers.
The company did not respond to a request for comment.
Mine idling slowed in the first half of 2017 as demand increased, but West Virginia still saw 204,564 tons of capacity idled — the second highest among U.S. states.
