Visa card payment system suffers Europewide outage

Card payment service Visa Inc. saw its service crash in the U.K. and elsewhere in Europe on Friday afternoon.

Rival card payment system Mastercard Inc. was also cited on social media as having system problems and the company said it was investigating whether it too had suffered a fault in its systems late on Friday afternoon.

Visa said in a statement: "Visa is currently experiencing a service disruption. This incident is preventing some Visa transactions in Europe from being processed. We are investigating the cause and working as quickly as possible to resolve the situation."

The Bank of Ireland Group PLC told customers it was aware of the problems with Visa and said the issue was affecting "multiple banks" across Europe.

Paymentsense, a company which helps over 60,000 businesses across the U.K. and Ireland with card payment systems, said that businesses using its services are struggling to take Visa payments.

"There is currently a disruption of service in taking payments from Visa. It is affecting all payment providers across the U.K. and Ireland."

Visa issued another statement later on June 1 saying that the issue resulted from a hardware failure, and that it has no reason to believe this was linked to any unauthorised access or malicious event.
