BP Wind Energy North America Inc. installed an energy storage system at its 25-MW Titan I Wind Farm in Hand County, S.D.
The 212-kW/840-kWh battery storage system manufactured and installed by Tesla Inc. will help improve energy efficiency at the wind facility. It is the first such installation of battery technology by BP Wind Energy, which the company said could "hold promise" for other sites.
"As renewables form a bigger part of the energy mix, storage systems like this one will become increasingly important," said Dev Sanyal, CEO of BP's global alternative energy business. "This project will help us develop new business models around the integration of renewables, battery storage and other forms of energy — and it underscores our commitment to being a part of the transition to a lower-carbon future."
BP Wind Energy is a subsidiary of BP PLC.
