Reports: Italy's president gives parties until Aug. 27 to end political crisis

Italy's President Sergio Mattarella has given the country's political parties until Aug. 27 to form a new coalition government as he failed to decide on a path forward, including the possibility of holding snap elections, Reuters and Politico reported.

Mattarella gave parties more time after meeting their leaders Aug. 22 to fix the ongoing crisis, which started earlier in August when Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and his League party decided to end a ruling coalition with the Five Star Movement due to policy differences.

The political crisis, which has also led to Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte's resignation, needs a "speedy solution to face the deadlines ahead," including economic decisions, Mattarella said, according to Politico.

Mattarella said he will only dissolve parliament and call fresh elections if parties are unable to find a strong majority and form a new government.

Members of the Five Star Movement have reportedly given the green light for negotiations with the center-left Democratic Party on forming a coalition.
