Alibaba to set up logistics center in Thailand

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. plans to open a logistics facility in Thailand to support its e-commerce operations in Southeast Asia, the Bangkok Post reported March 26, citing Industry Minister Uttama Savanayana.

Jack Ma, the Chinese retailer's founder and executive chairman, will reportedly announce this logistics initiative along with the company's investment plans in the Thai government's Eastern Economic Corridor, or EEC, program when he visits the country on March 30. The EEC aims to develop eastern provinces in Thailand into a thriving ASEAN economic zone.

Savanayana told the newspaper that Alibaba intends to set up a logistics center in Chachoengsao, one of three EEC provinces, to help distribute its products in the country as well as in Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam. Alibaba's research and development unit for small and medium enterprises is also expected to be in the EEC, according to the report.

The newspaper added that the government expects the move to further drive investments from other foreign companies. Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. is considering building its second digital research and development center in the EEC, Savanayana reportedly said.

In July 2017, it was reported that Alibaba had plans of creating an e-commerce park spanning more than 118 acres in the country.
