Report: US legislators examine Google-Huawei messaging deal

Google Inc.'s relationship with Chinese device manufacturer Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., which sells phones that run on Google's Android operating system, is drawing scrutiny from some U.S. lawmakers, The Wall Street Journal reported June 7, citing sources with knowledge of the matter.

The objective of Google's deal with Huawei, similar to its deals with other phone-makers, was to upgrade Android phones from an older messaging technology, known as SMS, to a newer technology, RCS, according to the Journal. However, some lawmakers fear that it could be abused by Chinese government officials interested in spying on Americans, a charge that Huawei has denied.

U.S. legislators this year have been working to limit the U.S. reach of Huawei and other Chinese smartphone-makers, including ZTE Corp., which they deem to be threats to national security.

Lawmakers including Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Texas, and Rep. Robert Pittenger, R-N.C., are considering asking Google to answer questions about the Huawei agreement, the Journal reported.

Facebook Inc. has also recently drawn scrutiny for its data partnerships with Huawei and three other Chinese electronics-makers. Facebook plans to terminate its agreement with Huawei during the week of June 9, Reuters reported.
