Philippines suspends another nickel mine over environmental damages

The Philippine government issued a suspension order onunlisted firm Berong Nickel Corp.'s namesake nickel mine in Palawan because of a spill thataffected corals, Reuters reported July 17, citing the Department of Environmentand Natural Resources Secretary Regina Lopez.

Lopez said the spill was unintentional but the company wouldbe held accountable for clean up. However, DMCI Chairman and CEO IsidroConsunji of Berong said he was unaware of the suspension order and the spill.

This is the third nickel mine to be suspended in less thantwo weeks. Lopez warned other miners to adhere to environmental laws.

"If [miners] are not doing well and they are notfollowing the law, we will withdraw the [environmental clearancecertificates]," Lopez was quoted as saying.

According to the report, the mine produced 868,000 tonnes ofnickel ore in 2015.

This comes amid the country has starting a one-month auditof all the mines.

Earlier, the government ordered two nickel projects in theZambales province to suspendoperations due to environmental infractions.
