As Comcast looks to expand international footprint, bidding war for Sky looms

U.S. cable giant Comcast Corp. has revealed ambitious plans to extend its international footprint with a rival bid for Sky plc, challenging 21st Century Fox Inc.'s efforts to take control of the British pay TV giant. Comcast, which owns film studio Universal Pictures and NBCUniversal Media LLC's broadcast TV network NBC (US), on Feb. 27 announced a cash proposal of £12.50 per share for Sky. Comcast said its proposal represents a 16% increase in value over the existing 21st Century Fox Inc. offer for Sky.

US Supreme Court hears arguments in Microsoft data privacy case

Even as the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments Feb. 27 regarding a case about the reach of domestic search warrants when electronic data is stored overseas, several justices suggested that the matter would best be resolved by Congress. The case in question dates back to 2013, when U.S. prosecutors issued a warrant directing Microsoft Corp. to "seize and produce" the contents of an email account belonging to a user connected to a drug-trafficking case. While Microsoft provided some information to the government that was stored in a server domestically, it declined to turn over customer content that was stored in a server in Ireland.

NBCU calls Pyeongchang Olympics 'more dominant' than ever

NBCUniversal Media wrapped up its coverage of the Winter Olympics and even if the viewership was not exactly golden by past standards, Comcast's programming arm finished its presentation from Pyeongchang in the black. Mark Lazarus, chairman of NBC Broadcasting and Sports, said the final day of coverage from South Korea, that the 2018 Winter Games "will be the fourth consecutive Olympics that we make a profit, starting with London in 2012."

Discovery eyes US, global OTT opportunities following close of Scripps deal

Discovery Communications Inc. CEO David Zaslav told analysts the programmer is speaking with telco giants about differentiated content offerings for their mobile services. Zaslav said the combined company could create "a pretty compelling offering" at a monthly price point of $6 to $8 "that would look a lot different than Amazon Prime, a lot different than Netflix [Inc.], and it could be very attractive in every language globally."

Advertising slump hits ITV, but online trust crisis could boost future revenues

ITV Plc profits tumbled as U.K. economic and political uncertainty slashed marketing spend, but the commercial broadcaster said dwindling confidence in online advertising would benefit traditional TV. With cyclical factors fueling an ad slowdown in Britain, the group's net advertising revenue slid 5% to £1.59 billion, while pretax profits fell 6% to £800 million for the year ended Dec. 31, 2017.
