NRG Energy Inc. announced plans Sept. 24 to accelerate its greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
The new target compares to a plan announced in 2014 to slash greenhouse gas emissions 50% by 2030 and 90% by 2050. Independent power producer NRG said it now expects to reach the 50% reduction target five years earlier.
NRG's goals align with guidance by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC, which calls for limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius to avoid the worst effects of climate change.
"Addressing climate change is a priority for our company as it presents one of the greatest challenges and opportunities of our time," NRG President and CEO Mauricio Gutierrez said. "By realigning our carbon reduction efforts to the new climate imperative, we create value for all stakeholders and lead our sector towards achieving a sustainable future."
