BMW to install Alibaba's voice assistant in China vehicles

German carmaker Bayerische Motoren Werke AG on Jan. 7 said it will integrate Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s Tmall Genie voice assistant in selected models in China by 2019-end.

Users with a Tmall Genie-compatible device at home will be able to use the assistant in BMW vehicles through audio output and on car displays. Customers will be able to place orders, check the weather, view cinema schedules and play music, among other functions. Users will not require a smartphone as the BMW models will be equipped with a SIM card.

The companies announced the collaboration at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. BMW will be the first premium automaker to fully integrate Alibaba's platform into its cars.

In September 2018, Alibaba launched a car-to-home service with Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd.'s Volvo brand that allows users to use Tmall Genie to control smart home devices from their cars.
