European consumer groups sue Facebook over data misuse

Various consumer groups in Europe are launching class-action suits against Facebook Inc. following the data privacy scandal involving Cambridge Analytica LLC, Telecompaper and The Local reported.

Belgium's Test-Achats/Test-Aankoop, Spain's OCU and sister organizations in Italy and Portugal seek damages not just for affected users, but for all Facebook users in their territories. At least €200 per user will be sought as damages.

OCU said it believes "Facebook violated legislation regarding data protection" because users were not asked for consent nor informed about how their data will be used.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands' Consumentenbond said it will not join the class-action suit as Dutch law prohibits such cases. However, it does support the move.

Facebook founder, Chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently appeared before members of the European Parliament to address concerns regarding data privacy.
