Amazon.com Inc. plans to introduce the technology behind its cashierless Go stores to other retail formats such as stores in airports and movie theaters, CNBC reported Sept. 30, citing people familiar with the matter.
The e-commerce giant is reportedly in talks to bring its Go technology to Cineworld Group PLC-owned Regal theaters and OTG EXP Inc.'s CIBO Express stores at airports. One of the sources also told the news wire that Amazon is considering setting up the technology at concession stands in baseball stadiums.
According to the report, Amazon plans to begin installing the system in the first quarter of 2020 and expects hundreds of stores to operate on this technology by the end of that year.
An Amazon spokesperson told S&P Global Market Intelligence that the company does not comment on rumors or speculation.
The e-commerce giant has 16 Amazon Go checkout-free grocery stores in the U.S. to date.
It was earlier reported that the company had reached out to Los Angeles and San Jose international airports to set up Amazon Go stores inside their grounds.
Amazon is reportedly looking to open 3,000 Amazon Go stores by 2021, according to Bloomberg News.
