New orders for manufactured durable goods in the U.S. fell more than expected in April, down 1.7% to $248.5 billion from the revised $252.7 billion in March, data from the U.S. Census Bureau showed.
Econoday had estimated a 1.2% decline in April.
Transportation drove the decline, dropping 6.1% to $87.1 billion. Excluding transportation, new orders were up 0.9%, while they were down 1.9% excluding defense.
Shipments of manufactured durable goods broke an eight-month streak of increases and slipped 0.1% to $246.7 billion.
Unfilled orders were up 0.5% to $1.153 trillion.
