Viacom, Telefónica ink LatAm mobile agreement; RTVE seals distribution deals

TOP NEWS

* Viacom Inc. signed a mobile streaming deal with Telefónica SA for Latin America. The deal allows the Movistar Play platform to carry live feeds of MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Comedy Central and Paramount Channel in the region beginning in 2018, according to a Feb. 5 news release. Viacom's mobile streaming apps MTV Play, Nickelodeon Play, Comedy Central Play and Noggin will also be available to Movistar Play subscribers. The deal extends an existing carriage deal between the two companies.

* RTVE bagged several distribution deals in Latin America, including an agreement with Movistar Play to carry TVE Internacional, Star HD and Clan, NexTVNews Latin America reported Feb. 1. TVE Internacional will also be carried by Claro and Movistar, while 24 Horas will be carried by Dish in Mexico.

* ESPN Inc. announced a localized version of its sports program ESPN FC for Peru, following a Peruvian version of SportsCenter, Rapid TV News reported Feb. 6. The show will be available via ESPN2 and streaming platform ESPN Play, featuring soccer news, commentaries and highlights. ESPN is a joint venture of Walt Disney Co. and Hearst Corp.

* América Móvil SAB de CV's Claro Sports and Spanish sports newspaper MARCA are offering 50 hours of 2018 Winter Olympics content in virtual reality, via the Marca Claro 360 app, NexTVNews Latin America reported Feb. 6. The VR content, which will include the opening and closing ceremonies, skiing, curling, snowboarding, figure skating, short track speed skating, ski jumping and hockey, will be available in 17 countries across Latin America.

* Peruvian watchdog Organismo Supervisor de Inversión Privada en Telecomunicaciones is planning to abolish charges for pay TV set-top boxes, Rapid TV News reported Feb. 6. Pay TV operators should at least offer one free set-top box, as well as free installation, to develop market dynamism, the watchdog said.

* Telefónica has proposed a new structure for its Spanish and Latin American units. Proposed changes include splitting Latin American division Telefónica Hispanoamérica into two new units: Telefónica Hispam Sur will cover businesses in Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay, while Telefónica Hispam Norte will cover Colombia, Mexico, Central America, Ecuador and Venezuela.

* DirecTV Argentina is planning to roll out a 4K-UHD decoder in April, which will allow access to all 64 games of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in 4K, Telecompaper reported Jan. 25. The company has partnered with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. to promote the offer alongside 4K TV sets.

* RTVE's kids channel Clan is joining the Axtel TV platform, operated by Mexican operator and ICT services provider Axtel, Telecompaper reported Jan. 16. Clan, which is aimed at children aged two to 12, will be available on Axtel TV channel 320.

* Argentina's Cablevision launched the HD signals of HBO Family, Fox Family, Mas Chic and H2, Telecompaper reported Jan. 15. Aside from pay TV, the channels can also be accessed via multiscreen service Cablevision Flow.
