Temporarily layoffs at Ford due to retooling of Michigan plants

Ford Motor Co. said about 2,000 hourly employees in Michigan will be temporarily laid off amid retooling of its assembly and stamping plants in Wayne aimed at building the Ranger pick-up trucks and Bronco sport utility vehicles.

The U.S. automaker said the retooling will start on or about May 7 through Oct. 22.

The affected employees will receive approximately 75% of their take-home pay if they have one-year seniority, Ford's manufacturing and labor communications manager, Kelli Felker, told Reuters in an email, adding that the hourly employees will return to work either at the Michigan assembly or another Ford facility.

The move comes as sales of Focus small car, currently manufactured at the plant, declined 30% in 2017 from the previous year. In October 2017, Ford announced plans to move production of the next-generation Focus for North America to China. The automaker seeks to refocus capital allocation to higher-return products.

The Ranger trucks are projected to enter production at the plant later this year, and the new Bronco SUV's production will start in 2020, Reuters reported.
