Beyond Meat, Subway to trial vegan meatball in North America

Doctor's Associates Inc., doing business as Subway Restaurants, will launch a plant-based meatball marinara in partnership with Beyond Meat Inc., according to an Aug. 7 release.

The Beyond Meatball Marina will be available for a limited time at 685 participating Subway locations in the U.S. and Canada beginning September. The sandwich has a plant-based meatball served with marinara sauce, provolone cheese and grated parmesan cheese.

The move reflects a broader trend among restaurant operators to expand their menu options for vegan customers. In July, Dunkin' Brands Group Inc. and Beyond Meat debuted a plant-based breakfast sandwich at select Dunkin' restaurants in Manhattan, N.Y. Restaurant Brands International Inc.'s Burger King and Impossible Foods Inc. have also recently rolled out the Impossible Whopper burger at all Burger King locations across the U.S.
