Mazda unveils joint research project with Saudi Aramco, AIST

Mazda Motor Corp. on Aug. 8 unveiled a joint research project with Saudi Arabian Oil Co. and Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, or AIST, that aims to develop more efficient internal combustion engines and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

As part of the project, Saudi Aramco will develop a fuel using a refinery process that results in lower carbon dioxide emissions, while Mazda and AIST will develop a high-efficiency engine that will use the fuel.

The parties expect the initiative to yield technologies that will cut carbon dioxide emissions on a well-to-wheel basis.
