Va. coal exports up 32.7% YOY in June

Coal exports from the Hampton Roads port facilities in Virginia increased 32.7% year over year to 3.6 million tons in June but declined 5.1% from May's total, according to data obtained July 10 from the Virginia Maritime Association.

At Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Lamberts Point facility, which primarily handles metallurgical coal, coal exports reached nearly 1.4 million tons in June, up 15.4% from the 1.2 million tons of coal delivered in the year-ago period.

Kinder Morgan Inc.'s Pier IX facility, which mostly handles thermal coal, shot up 98.7% year over year to 928,277 tons of coal, compared to 467,196 tons in June 2017.

Dominion Terminal Associates LLP, owned by coal producers Contura Energy Inc. and Arch Coal Inc., saw its coal exports rise 22.8% year over year to roughly 1.2 million tons of coal, compared to 1.0 million tons in the same period in 2017.
