Top Chilean court orders another environmental review of Dominga project

Chile's Supreme Court ordered another environmental review of privately owned Minera Andes Iron's US$2.5 billion Dominga iron ore-copper project to hear demands made by activists and claims by the company, Reuters reported.

Opponents believe that the project's proximity to sensitive ecological reserves, about 500 kilometers north of the Chilean capital of Santiago, would harm the environment.

The business community and conservative politicians have criticized the prolonged evaluation and legal battle over Dominga, saying the delays are largely due to politics, according to the newswire.

The Supreme Court said in its decision that the First Environmental Court of Antofagasta "will review and decide the merits of the matter under discussion," according to Reuters.

The company decided to appeal a decision by Chile's Committee of Ministers that rejected Dominga in August 2017, saying it was a "political and arbitrary decision, not technical."
