Drax Group PLC received approval from the U.K. Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy to build a 299-MW gas-fired power plant in southern Wales.
The Abergelli power facility will cost up to £90 million to build and could be generating power as soon as 2022, subject to securing a capacity market agreement from the government.
Abergelli, a rapid response power plant, can go from cold to full load in less than 20 minutes. "Flexible, reliable power stations like this are essential to provide the power Britain's homes, businesses, transport and infrastructure need," said Andy Koss, CEO for generation at Drax, in a Sept. 19 statement.
