Iberdrola SA has brought online the first of 102 turbines at its 714-MW East Anglia One offshore wind project in the U.K.
The units are being provided by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA, and the first is now supplying power to a substation in Burstall. Iberdrola's U.K. subsidiary ScottishPower Renewables (UK) Ltd. now plans to connect a further 25 turbines that it has already installed at the site.
The wind farm is scheduled to be fully operational in 2020 and is expected to cost approximately £2.5 billion, according to a Sept. 12 release. Upon completion, the project will produce enough output to about 630,000 homes.
During the 2018 to 2022 period, Iberdrola intends to invest about €13.26 billion in an offshore wind portfolio with a total capacity of more than 10,000 MW in the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the U.S.
