Vistra Energy's 180-MW Texas solar farm enters operation

Vistra Energy Corp. on June 1 said it achieved commercial operations at its 180-MW Upton 2 photovoltaic solar farm in West Texas.

The plant is designed to power approximately 56,700 average residences in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas market during normal weather conditions and 27,700 during periods of peak demand, Vistra said in a news release.

Luminant Generation Co. LLC is the plant owner and also as serves its qualified scheduling entity with ERCOT. Vistra Energy acquired the Upton 2 project in May 2017 to expand its retail solar offerings.

"Through this project, we're enabling our Texas retail brand, [TXU Energy Retail Co. LLC], to enhance its retail solar offerings, and we're diversifying Luminant's generation fleet, as well," said Curt Morgan, Vistra president and CEO. "This project makes strategic sense for us as a business, and we're excited that it is officially powering Texas in time for the 2018 summer."
