Rosebud to reopen Pa. mine amid resurgence in coking coal market

The recovery seen in the metallurgical coal market has allowed Pennsylvania-based Rosebud Mining Co. to reopen its Cresson Mine, The Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown, Pa., reported Dec. 13.

Eight workers are assigned to the Cresson Mine site, where work to build a portal into the underground coal seam is underway. Once the portal is equipped for mining this spring, they will be replaced by 17 workers, a number that Rosebud Mining Executive Vice President Jim Barker said could grow.

Citing a 2005 review by the state Department of Environmental Protection, Barker estimated there is 20 years worth of coal below the surface, across a nearly 3,000-acre underground tract, said the report.

Aside from the resurging market, Barker also attributed Rosebud's renewed confidence in the sector to Donald Trump's presidential victory.

"I don't think we would've pulled the trigger if it wasn't for (Donald) Trump getting elected," he said, describing his victory as a breath of fresh air. "We're hopeful things will be better for us under the next administration."
