Garmin, Navico resolve patent dispute

Garmin International Inc., a business unit of consumer electronics producer Garmin Ltd., said Feb. 7 that its three-year dispute with marine electronics manufacturer Navico Inc. over sonar and auto guidance patents has ended.

The two came to a resolution that involves a broad cross-licensing of patents and other intellectual property, which will let them bring new products and technologies to the market faster, according to the release.

Garmin was ordered on Sept. 8, 2017 to pay $38.76 million in damages after a federal jury at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas found that it infringed two of Navico's DownScan Imaging sonar patents. Andrew Etkind, a vice president at Garmin and the company's general counsel, then said that the company disagreed with the verdict and will file for appeal.
