Report: EU to debate Turkey sanctions, NATO membership

EU leaders will debate whether to impose sanctions on Turkey next week and revoke its NATO membership, following its major military offensive in Syria, Bloomberg News reported, citing France's EU affairs minister Amelie de Montchalin.

"This will obviously be debated at the EU Council next week," said Montchalin, according to Bloomberg News. "Our condemnation is firm, but not just in words. You can imagine that we are not going to stick to words around the table."

Turkey launched a military operation Oct. 9 in Kurdish regions in Syria after U.S. troops pulled out. It defended the move as an effort to resist Kurdish militias it claims support an anti-Turkey rebellion, the BBC reported.

The Kurdish Red Crescent reported 11 civilian deaths and 28 injuries so far, the BBC noted.

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Turkey's economy if the country took action in Syria that he considered "off limits."
