Ormat's battery energy storage system in Vermont starts commercial operation

Ormat Technologies Inc. has started commercial operation of its Hinesburg Battery Energy Storage System in Vermont.

The project, which can supply up to 4 MWh during peak consumption times, was developed under an agreement with Vermont Electric Cooperative Inc., according to an Oct. 24 news release.

Under the agreement, Ormat subsidiary Viridity Energy Solutions Inc. will operate the lithium battery energy storage system and provide coincident peak load reduction services to the cooperative over a minimum 10-year term. The system is sized to provide a guaranteed 1-MW discharge during one to four hours per forecast event over the 10-year agreement.
