A top Chinese economic adviser will visit the U.S. with a possible mandate to manage the increasing trade tensions between China and the U.S., as President Donald Trump mulls strict tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from China, Bloomberg News reported Feb. 24, citing "a person familiar with the matter."
Liu is expected to arrive in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 27, the report said, citing the source, who asked not to be named as the trip has not been officially announced.
The trip by Liu He, the top economic adviser to Chinese President Xi Jinping, signals an expanded role to ease friction between the two governments, according to the report.
Liu is a possible contender to head China's national bank and is expected to be named vice premier in charge of financial policy by the National People's Congress in March, Bloomberg reported.
