Smith & Nephew to buy Germany-based Brainlab's joint reconstruction business

London-based Smith & Nephew PLC agreed to buy privately held and Munich-based Brainlab AG's orthopedic joint reconstruction business.

The business provides software that allows surgeons to plan and evaluate various stages of operations. The deal also includes certain intangible assets and Brainlab's orthopedic salesforce, which will be integrated with Smith & Nephew's robotics commercial organization.

Smith & Nephew and Brainlab also entered a collaboration to develop applications in orthopedic reconstruction and sports medicine. Smith & Nephew, a medical device maker, is focused on products for joint repair surgeries, wound care and sports medicine.

The partnership will allow Smith & Nephew to deploy Brainlab's robotics and other digital technologies to the ambulatory surgery market through its distribution network.

The companies did not disclose financial terms of the transactions.
