ADM, Cargill, General Mills, others form agriculture sustainability consortium

Ten agricultural companies and nonprofit organisations announced Feb. 26 the formation of a national agricultural supply chain consortium that aims to develop a market-based approach on land stewardship.

The Ecosystem Services Market Consortium, or ESCM, comprises of Archer-Daniels-Midland Co., Bunge Ltd., Cargill Inc., General Mills Inc., Indigo Agriculture, Inc., McDonald's Corp., Noble Research Institute LLC, Soil Health Institute, The Nature Conservancy and Mars Inc.

ESMC will drive the use of analytical tools and technologies to measure and manage changes in sustainability outcomes. The consortium will work on sustaining healthy agricultural soil through carbon sequestration, improved water quality and reduced water demand.

The ESMC will be based within and managed by the Soil Health Institute.

Debbie Reed has been appointed as the consortium's executive director, who has been working on the project since its inception.
