US budget deficit widens less than expected in October

The U.S. government ran a monthly budget deficit of $100.49 billion in October compared to a surplus of $119.12 billion in September and a deficit of $63.21 billion in October 2017, the Treasury Department's latest report showed.

Econoday expected a deficit of $111.8 billion for the month.

Total monthly outlays increased to $353.18 billion in October from $224.44 billion in September, while October monthly receipts totaled $252.69 billion, down from $343.56 billion in the previous month.

In fiscal year 2018, which ended Sept. 30, the government ran a total budget deficit of $779.00 billion, with outlays and receipts totaling $4.108 trillion and $3.329 trillion, respectively.
