Rakuten to rent TEPCO Group's infrastructure for mobile network biz

Rakuten Inc. said March 6 that it has reached an agreement with Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. and TEPCO Power Grid Inc. to use TEPCO Group's infrastructure rental program.

The agreement allows Rakuten to establish mobile network operator, or MNO, base stations using TEPCO Group's transmission towers, utility poles, telecommunication towers, rooftop facilities and other equipment.

The deal comes after Rakuten applied for a frequency band with Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications to become the fourth telecom operator in the country. The company seeks 1.7 GHz and 3.4 GHz bands for the fourth generation mobile communications system, or 4G, which it will use to enter the MNO business.

The communications ministry is expected to make its decision about the band allocation by the end of March, according to the release.
