Nickel mining in New Caledonia suspended amid cyclone

Nickel mining has been suspended in New Caledonia after Category 3 Cyclone Cook hit on the afternoon of April 10, Reuters reported the same day.

Eramet unit Societe Le Nickel suspended mining at its five sites but continued the smelting operations in the capital, Noumea, at a reduced level, it said in an emailed statement to the newswire.

Glencore Plc and Vale SA also have mining operations in the country but were not available for immediate comment, the report added.

Glencore operates the Koniambo nickel-cobalt mine and smelter, while Vale runs the Goro nickel-cobalt mine and refinery in the country.
