Uber Technologies Inc. cut 435 positions in its engineering and product teams, TechCrunch reported Sept. 10.
The layoffs included 170 people in the product team and 265 in the engineering team, the technology news site reported, adding that Uber Eats and Freight employees were not affected.
Uber did not immediately respond to S&P Global Market Intelligence's request for comment.
The San Francisco-based company, which went public in May, also lifted its hiring freeze that was in effect since early August on both teams, according to the report.
More than 85% of those laid off were based in the U.S., while 10% of the layoffs affect employees in the Asia-Pacific region, the news site reported.
"Our hope with these changes is to reset and improve how we work day to day — ruthlessly prioritizing, and always holding ourselves accountable to a high bar of performance and agility," an Uber spokesperson told TechCrunch. "While certainly painful in the moment, especially for those directly affected, we believe that this will result in a much stronger technical organization, which going forward will continue to hire some of the very best talent around the world."
According to the spokesperson, Uber originally "hired rapidly and in a decentralized way."
In July, the ride-hailing company cut about 400 marketing jobs globally, according to The New York Times.
