Sonic profit beats consensus by 17.1% in fiscal Q1

Sonic Corp. said its normalized net income for the fiscal first quarter ended Nov. 30, 2014, came to 19 cents per share, compared with the S&P Capital IQ consensus estimate of 16 cents per share.

EPS climbed 46.3% year over year from 13 cents.

Normalized net income, which excludes unusual gains or losses on a pre- and after-tax basis, was $10.5 million, an increase of 38.6% from $7.6 million in the prior-year period.

The normalized profit margin increased to 7.3% from 6.0% in the year-earlier period.

Total revenue grew 10.4% on an annual basis to $139.9 million from $126.7 million, and total operating expenses increased 8.0% from the prior-year period to $116.9 million from $108.3 million.

Reported net income grew 21.8% on an annual basis to $9.9 million, or 18 cents per share, from $8.1 million, or 14 cents per share.
