The Railroad Commission of Texas issued 811 original drilling permits in December 2018, down from the 933 permits released the previous month and the 885 permits issued in December 2017.
For the most recent month, 750 permits were for new oil or gas wells, 51 were for wellbore recompletion, and 10 were to re-enter plugged wellbores. The permits included 180 for oil-only drilling, 43 for gas-only drilling, and 537 for oil or gas drilling.
The commission said it processed 564 oil, 156 gas and 27 injection well completions in December. During December 2017, the commission reported 514 oil, 80 gas and 26 injection well completions.
Well completions for 2018 totaled 10,986, up 59% from the 6,914 well completions recorded in 2017.
The Midland area had the most oil well completions, with 281, and also the most gas well completions, at 57. In second place, the San Antonio area recorded 118 oil completions and 28 gas completions for the month.
