Continental Aktiengesellschaft said June 11 that it will integrate artificial intelligence into its new camera platform to improve advanced sensor technologies for cars.
The technology will be used for the German auto parts maker's fifth-generation multifunction camera, which will start large-scale production in 2020.
Through AI, neural networks and machine learning integration, the sensors will be able to detect pedestrians and classify gestures, Continental said. It will also be able to detect simple objects and complex scenarios.
"AI plays a large role in taking over human tasks. With AI software, the vehicle is able to interpret even complex and unforeseeable traffic situations," Karl Haupt, head of Continental's advanced driver assistance system, was quoted as saying.
Continental's new technology is in line with the company's plan to expand its global AI activities.
The company said it is collaborating with NVIDIA Corp., Baidu Inc. and other research institutes in the field, including the U.K.'s University of Oxford, Germany's Technische Universität Darmstadt and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras.
