Total U.S. coal production for the week ended Sept. 7 decreased 5.7% year over year to 13.3 million tons from 14.1 million tons, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
For the 52 weeks ended Sept. 7, production totaled 732.3 million tons, representing a 2.9% year-over-year decline, while year-to-date coal output slipped 4.3% year over year to 493.1 million tons.

The western region's coal production for the week reached 7.4 million tons, decreasing by 8.5% from the prior year's 8.0 million tons. Data for the western region covers Powder River Basin mines.
Coal production from Appalachian mines totaled 3.5 million tons, unchanging year over year.
The interior region's production decreased 4.1% to 2.4 million tons, compared to 2.5 million tons a year ago. Interior region data covers mines in the Illinois Basin.
The EIA's production data is derived from rail carload estimates.
