Report: BT, Vodafone may petition UK government over Huawei 5G

British Telecom and Vodafone Group PLC are planning to tell British Prime Minister Boris Johnson that banning Chinese equipment manufacturers in the U.K. will stunt the country's digital economic growth, Sky News reported, citing telecom industry sources.

The CEOs of British operators BT and Vodafone, Philip Jansen and Nick Read, respectively, are mulling a letter to Johnson.

The telco executives may argue there is a lack of evidence to justify placing an outright ban on Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., one source told Sky News.

The news comes after the U.S. warned the U.K about allowing Huawei into the country's 5G telecommunications networks.
