Google makes 1,600-MW renewable energy purchases worldwide

Google LLC signed a 1,600-MW package of renewable power purchase agreements, as part of its sustainability efforts.

The agreements include 18 deals that will support the development of new renewable energy projects. The deals will increase the company's worldwide portfolio of wind and solar agreements by more than 40% to 5,500 MW.

The deals mark "the biggest corporate purchase of renewable energy in history," Google CEO Sundar Pichai wrote in a Sept. 19 blog post. The agreements bring additional large-scale solar and wind farms, representing more than $2 billion in new energy infrastructure, to electric grids worldwide.

"Bringing incremental renewable energy to the grids where we consume energy is a critical component of pursuing 24x7 carbon-free energy for all of our operations," Pichai wrote.

The Alphabet Inc. subsidiary committed to purchase 720 MW of electricity from solar farms in the U.S., comprising 155 MW in North Carolina, 75 MW in South Carolina and 490 MW in Texas.

In Europe, the company will purchase 793 MW of the new renewable energy capacity, including 255 MW in Finland, 286 MW in Sweden, 92 MW in Belgium and 160 MW in Denmark.

In South America, Google will be adding 125 MW of renewable energy capacity to the grid that supplies its data center in Chile. The Chile deal marks the company's first purchase of power from a hybrid technology that combines solar and wind.
