Shell makes new discovery near Appomattox platform in Gulf of Mexico

Shell Offshore Inc., a subsidiary of Anglo-Dutch major Royal Dutch Shell PLC, made a discovery in the Gulf of Mexico near the new Appomattox platform, the company said in a May 24 news release.

The Dover discovery, which is Shell's sixth in the Norphlet play, is approximately 13 miles from the recently completed Appomattox platform and is considered an attractive potential tieback.

"By focusing on near-field exploration opportunities in the Norphlet, we are adding to our resource base in a prolific basin that will be anchored by the Appomattox development," said Andy Brown, upstream director for Royal Dutch Shell.

The Appomattox platform is expected to begin producing oil before the end of 2019.

Amid the ongoing rebound in oil prices, Shell is banking on an improvement in the offshore sector. Apart from Appomattox, Shell Offshore is also moving ahead with the development of the deepwater Vito project in the Gulf of Mexico.

With a current estimated, recoverable resource of 300 million barrels of oil equivalent, Vito is slated to begin producing oil in 2021. That project is expected to reach peak production of approximately 100,000 boe/d.

In 2015, Shell began to redesign the Vito development, reducing initial cost estimates by more than 70%.
