Eros Now, Microsoft to build video platform; Korea to get new streaming service

Top news

* Eros Now, a South Asian entertainment platform owned by Eros International PLC, teamed up with Microsoft Corp. to build a next-generation online video platform on Microsoft Azure. As part of the collaboration, Eros Now will use Microsoft Azure to develop the online video platform, create new voice offerings and an engine that generates personalized content recommendations for consumers.

* South Korean media giant CJ ENM CO. Ltd. is joining forces with local cable network JTBC Co. Ltd. to launch a streaming service in 2020, TBI Vision reported, citing a statement. The platform will be led by CJ ENM and is an expansion of the CJ Group unit's existing Tving service, which offers shows and films from the company's portfolio of channels, along with select programs from JTBC. The companies plan to co-develop original content and supply more target-specific external content to viewers.

* Tencent Holdings Ltd.-backed Kuaishou is considering filing for an IPO in the U.S. in 2020 and is raising more than US$1 billion in a pre-IPO round at a US$25 billion valuation, Bloomberg News reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The Chinese startup, which operates a short video app, plans to expand its business and beat competition from Beijing ByteDance Technology Co. Ltd.'s TikTok.

Content and carriage deals

* Netflix Inc. said it will produce a new South Korean original series titled "Move to Heaven." The show follows a man with Asperger's syndrome who runs a trauma cleaning business with his uncle.

* Hungama Play, a video-streaming service operated by Hungama Digital Media Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., signed a partnership with OnePlus Technology (Shenzhen) Co. Ltd. to make its content available on the soon-to-be-launched OnePlus TV, Television Post reported. Indian over-the-top service SonyLIV inked a similar deal to give users of OnePlus TV access to the content library of Sony Pictures Networks India Pvt. Ltd.

* LG U+ will exclusively release six French drama series on its IPTV service U+tv in partnership with France-based TV network TV5MONDE SA, iNews 24 reported. The titles include crime drama "L'art du crime," and spy thriller "The Bureau."

* China Telecom Corp. Ltd. reached a strategic 5G partnership with Tencent Video that will leverage the telco's multi-access edge computing platform for better 5G video experience, Securities Times reported.

* Dharma Productions Pvt. Ltd.'s "Drive" will premiere as an exclusive Netflix film globally, The Hindustan Times reported. The action-thriller heist film is the streaming giant's first original film with the Indian studio.

* Wavve, an entity created out of the merger of SK Telecom Co. Ltd.'s mobile media platform Oksusu with video service POOQ, plans to invest a total of 300 billion won by 2023 to produce original content, ZDNet Korea reported.

* Eros Now announced a partnership with Rokki Sdn. Bhd., the in-flight Wi-Fi service provider of Malaysian budget airline AirAsia Group Bhd. Under the tie-up, AirAsia Wi-Fi will host a variety of Eros Now content that travelers can watch for free.

Service launches

* ByteDance-owned short video platform Huoshan Video launched a mini-program feature that allows users to access mini-games within the app, TechNode reported, citing TechPlanet.

* Apple Inc.'s Apple TV+ will launch in India on Nov. 1 at 99 Indian rupees per month, a price point cheaper than its streaming rivals' offerings in the country, Digital TV Europe reported. Netflix's mobile-only plan in India costs 199 rupees, while Amazon.com Inc.'s Prime Video charges 129 rupees monthly.

* Shemaroo Entertainment Ltd.'s over-the-top platform ShemarooMe launched Bollywood Premiere, a new offering for Bollywood fans in the U.S. and India, Television Post reported. The new offering will premiere critically acclaimed Bollywood films every Friday.

Other news

* China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced that 32 apps or websites collected and used its users' information without approval in the second quarter of 2019, KrASIA reported. Some of the apps accused of misusing user information are livestreaming platform operators YY Inc. and DouYu International Holdings Ltd.

* Foxtel Cable Television Pty. Ltd. said it will focus on its Foxtel GO mobile app to provide a simplified experience for Foxtel and Foxtel Now customers. Customers using the Foxtel Now mobile app will be directed to download the Foxtel GO app via Apple's App Store or Google LLC's Play store.
