Twitter Inc. will add election labels for specified candidates running in the 2018 U.S. midterm general election.
The labels will contain relevant information about a political candidate, including what office they are seeking and which state the office is located in. The candidate's profile and the tweets from it, as well as the retweets, will all get labels. Labels will also appear on retweets off of Twitter, such as when they are embedded in a news story. The disclosure will be identifiable by a government building icon.
Labels will begin to appear after May 30 on the campaign Twitter accounts of candidates running for state Governor, the U.S. Senate or U.S. House of Representatives during the 2018 U.S. midterm general election, the company said in a May 23 blog post, adding that the move will help users "identify original sources and authentic information."
Twitter is working with the nonprofit, nonpartisan civic organization Ballotpedia to help identify the relevant campaign Twitter accounts.
